Extension Filers: Gather Your Tax Documents Before the Oct. 15 Deadline

Posted on October 8, 2024

Taxpayers with an extension must file their 2023 returns by Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024. To ensure an accurate and complete return, it's essential to gather all necessary documents beforehand. Key items include:

  • Social Security numbers.
  • Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit or information to make a tax payment.
  • W-2 forms from employer(s).
  • 1099 forms (for various income types).
  • 1099-K or 1099-MISC for gig economy workers.
  • Form 1099-INT for interest received.
  • Other income documents and records of virtual currency transactions.
  • 1095-A for health insurance.
  • Records for deductions or credits like child care or donations.

If any documents are missing, contact the employer or payer for a replacement. If unable to obtain the forms, taxpayers can use Form 4852 as a substitute for missing W-2s or 1099s, and estimate the necessary information. For additional assistance, taxpayers can find an authorized e-file provider using the IRS e-file locator service.
